Ancient Greek Adventure

The Hall was alive with Ancient Greeks as Y3 and Y4 donned their togas and chitons for their special history day.

Ian Weston joined us from Portals of the Past to take the children back in time and teach them about the Ancient Greeks.

In the morning, the children learnt about training for the Spartan army and discovered that it was a dangerous endeavour. There were risks of being beaten and even death at every turn. They found out that to grow stronger, they should eat a porridge enriched with pig’s blood! However, if you made it through your training to 18, your position in the army was assured.

The children had the chance to solve puzzles, answer quizzes and try some more traditional Greek foods.

The afternoon was a chance to find out about the success of Alexander the Great. The pupils found out the importance of military tactics, such as how to approach your enemy to get past his armour and where to position your men.

Finally, the Athenians took on the Spartans for brief Olympic Games.

The children had a fantastic day. Kacper loved the quizzes because although they were hard, they worked out all the answers. Imogen was delighted to find out the proper names for the parts of the Greek Armour. The Olympic Games were also a high spot for many children.

And finally...

An ancient Greek walks into the tailor's with a ripped pair of trousers.

"Euripides?" asks the tailor.

"Yeah. Eumenides?" replies the man.
